I use the grid as a metaphor for consciousness and a tool for abstraction. In my process, I grid up a photographic image of an observational moment and a corresponding scaled canvas. I analyse every square and mix up the paint to the colours in that square, and then paint the corresponding square on the canvas.

I work with photographs as a source of captured memories and graphite grid lines remain on the finished work and act as a screen between the original subjective experience and the infinite possible experiences of the viewer based on their own memories, thoughts and perspectives that they bring to the work.

The canvas cloth is important to each piece. I choose primed or unprimed cloth of different fibres based on the colours and energy of each image, integrating the tactility of the canvas into the experience for each piece.
